This week our team is working on an exciting home staging project and it has been reminding us of the simple mistakes that are often made in interior styling. We wanted to fill you in on a few so that you can avoid them in your own decor.
Make Sure You Avoid These 8 Mistakes
1. Ignoring the rule of thirds
Imagine the space you are styling as a rectangular photo, and then imagine lines vertically at 1/3 and 2/3, and horizontally at 1/3 and 2/3. Items placed on those lines, or at the intersection of those lines, will be the most interesting and pleasing to the eye. When styling a shelf, place your arrangement 1/3 from the edge of the shelf instead of the center of it.
2. Keeping everything the same height
In order to keep your home decor interesting to look at, make sure that you pay attention to the heights of your objects when you are grouping them together. Using varying heights in your object groups will ensure that your decor is aesthetically pleasing.
3. Picking the wrong furniture
Since it is much easier to match colors and decor to furniture than to match furniture to decor and colors, furniture should be the first thing that you pick out for your space. It also needs to be just the right size for the room in order to avoid it standing out too much if it's too big, or needing extra pieces if it's too small.
4. Using too many colors
Using too many colors in one room will make the space look busy and cluttered. We like to start with a base of a neutral color or tone and then choose a maximum of three colors to mix in to the room to make it pop, without making it look too busy.
5. Bad lighting
Lighting is what really sets the mood in a room and this is something that you want to get right. If a room is too dark it can be depressing and uninviting, but if it is too bright it can be harsh and hard to relax in. We like to use lamps as a way to create a warm atmosphere in the evening.
6. Hanging art too high
Something about an artwork being hung up high above eye level just makes a whole space look awkward. It is recommended, as a general rule of thumb, to hang your artwork at eye level for an average height adult.
7. Being too matchy matchy
Buying all of your furniture and decor at once as a matching set is not only no longer in style, it will also make your space look boring. Get creative! Mix and match pieces to create depth and diversity in your home.
8. Not adding personality
Adding personal touches and special momentos into your decor will really bring your home to life! Theres a reason that show homes have that un-lived in look, and that shouldn't be what you're after in your own home. We love to see people's personality come through in the little details of their home.
We hope that these little tips help you out with your interior styling! Leave us a comment to let us know which tips are your favourite, and stay tuned for details of our upcoming project.
