Over the past few months we have teamed up with Ryan from Viking Floors and Finishing quite a few times. He has helped us install several shelving units on our organizing projects, but that’s not all he does. He is a hardwood flooring expert, so we wanted to get an inside look on what’s so great about hardwood flooring. Here’s what he had to say..
1. Tell us a little about what you do, how long you have been in the
industry, and what pushed you to start your business
Thank you so much for having me! I mostly install hardwood flooring and custom wood interiors from baseboard and crown to custom-designed feature pieces. I've been in the industry for 13 years now, but about 6 years ago was when I found my passion for working specifically with anything hardwood and custom.
I decided to start Viking Floors & Finishing because I like to deal with people personally to accomplish what their dreams are and how I can help them achieve that with a little extra flair.
2. What sets hardwood apart from other flooring, such as laminate?
People generally, and understandably so, look at the price of hardwood flooring and that is sometimes enough to scare them away from it, but hardwood flooring is an amazing option above other alternatives because it is very easy to clean and also can be refinished and waxed. The reusability of hardwood can extend multiple generations and there are so many examples that have existed for over a century and are still getting re-surfaced.
Hardwood flooring is also naturally warmer. It has soft tones in color no matter what finish or stain you go with. Hardwood works as an insulator and has the ability to sustain the prominent temperature of a home.
Another reason for solid hardwood floors is the durability and strength. When installed correctly, it is able to withstand a lot of weight and survive a lot of pressure for an extended time where other options (laminate, vinyl, or engineered veneer) just can't stand up to the test of time.
3. If I'm on a budget, what's something I can afford without giving up
In terms of hardwood flooring, white oak is one of most affordable materials on the market and is in very high supply. It is able to take any variant of stain well and can look good in different size variants and surface finishes.
If that is still a bit above budget, there are some higher-quality laminates on the market recently that have textured surfaces and glosses, but I would rather recommend engineered hardwood products.
4. Are there any hardwood trends you're noticing this season?
White oak has taken North America by storm this last year and is still set to be the primary and more popular material to use for the rest of 2018 and into 2019. Maple is making a big comeback currently for a more traditional style, and also Ash and Hemlock are coming back for rustic, western builds. My personal favourite for a while has been white oak, so I am quite happy with what is trending in the industry right now.
5. Okay, so my floors are done, how do I make sure I keep them
looking this good?
There are some speciality cleaners that are manufactured by companies like Bona, which specializes in hardwood floor care and maintenance. It is also important for a homeowner to ask their floor installer about aftercare. The two simple things that can extend the life of your floor greatly: never vacuum against the grain of the hardwood floor and don't wash/mop the floor with water or any large form of liquid that could form puddles on the surface. When cleaning hardwood, treat with a little extra love like you would a treasured keepsake and don't be harsh with it. Also have furniture caps underneath your furniture to protect the floor as well.
6. How can I get you to come do my flooring now!?
I service the Lower Mainland/Vancouver area. I can be reached by multiple avenues of communication. My phone number is (778)345-5149. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org. People can also find me on Instagram @vikingfloorsandfinishing.
